NO CHESS on 3 Jan!!

THIS IS A REMINDER

THERE WILL BE NO ANCC CHESS CLUB MEETING ON 3 JAN 2012.

Sorry, but I will be unavailable to host.  I will be back for the following weeks meeting however!

Darin, for the ANCC

A great night!!!

Thank you everyone for coming out to ANCC last night and making it a fun night of chess. It was our biggest crowd in a bit.  I hope to see you all again soon.  Until then, happy trails, good luck in all your chess games, and in life.  Keep us at ANCC in mind, and don't forget to check the website often for any updates and such.

We had several people come back after a few weeks apart from us.  Some of you came back during winter break from University studies, and others after a short absence from us at ANCC.  You are all welcome, and we all appreciate your time and talents!

Annotated game ...!!

I have posted a game between Kyle and myself from last Tuesday night.  I asked Kyle for his annotations, and I have posted both his and my own thoughts on the game.  It was a good game, with dynamic play, up until the end.. but I don't want to spoil your reading!

If any of you other club members have games from club time, or other times, that you wish to post here, send them to me and I can post them to this site!  You don't have to have annotations, but those are welcome and encouraged of course, so the rest of us can gain insight into the 'behind the scenes' goings on!

Well wishes and BLITZ TOURNEY!!

...please enjoy this special time of year, and be safe.  I hope to see everyone at ANCC on this upcoming Tuesday, the 27th!

If we get a sufficient number of people willing to participate, I would like to have (simultaneously during regular club games/activities of course) a 5 min. Blitz tourney.  I still have the two small trophy left from this summers ill-fated tourney.  So, come on down and lets have an informal, no fee, Blitz tourney!!!

We will start the first rounds at 7:30 pm.  I hope to have it be a round robin format.  However, if we do get too many people (that would be a great problem to have!), we will go to a swiss style tourney.  I do want each 'round' to be the best of 3 games.  I will decide if to allow ties (1.5pts/1.5pts) or not on site.  As mentioned before this summer for this tourney, we could also option it to be where black gets a little extra time, but a 'draw' is a win for white.

Hope to see you all there, and talk of the wonderful celebrations from the previous week.

thanks for a great night!

Thank you all for a fun night of chess last night.  I wish to say a special thank you, and 'welcome' to Will, for coming in for his first visit to ANCC!  Plus, a couple of guests that only get to visit a few times a year (my own kids), and the good games that they played.  Ryan, had not played in probably a years time, and showed some good retention on his 'best of three' games versus an ANCC regular.

Also, I brought with me one of my own games, a 4 person chess game!  We had some fun with a few of us playing a few rounds of 4 person chess.  Interesting variation of chess!!  I will try to remember to bring that next week - actually, I'm sure my kids won't let me forget!  :)

One more thing.  My game with Kyle was a good, long hard-fought game, to which I blundered into a definite losing position at the very end when Kyle had approximately 1.5 min. left on his clock, to my approx. 5.5 minutes.  Such a sinking feeling when you play a complicated variation not known very well and with 'gut feeling risks' taken resulting in a fun game, and then ending it all with a silly blunder!  3 hours of fighting, and then, whoops!  Oh well!  I enjoyed the game, and will post this battle, hopefully with some comments of mine (and maybe Kyle's if he would be so kind to provide those) on the sister page on this site.

Thank you all, and have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!  I will see you all next Tuesday, 27 Dec. here at ANCC... same place, same time!

See you on the 13th!

Here is your official invitation (not that you need one!) to come on out, and join us for a night (or partial night if you wish :)  ) of chess and conversation between some great people.  Stay for an hour, or for for 5 hours!  I sincerely enjoy seeing all the people that do visit us at ANCC, and I believe all of us at the ANCC feel that way.
For those that have not visited recently, come down and reacquaint yourselves as we have had some new members (your only a guest the first night! ;)  )  come in recently.  I hope those new members continue to enhance the atmosphere in ANCC.  If you have yet to visit, and are curious, please come on down, say hello, and play a game of chess with us.

We have a large base of players that have come in and you never know who will be in attendance on any given Tuesday night, save for Kyle and myself.  :)  We have some youngsters ( 6-8 yrs old), some teens, and then adults of every generation.  Please set aside a night in your schedule to enjoy an evening of intellectual stimulation as well as the company of others!

For the ANCC,
Darin

Tomorrow Night 22 Nov.

I am looking forward to seeing many of our ANCC chess players tomorrow night during our regular Tuesday night club time. Plus of course, newcommers are welcome as well!!

Start off (for many) the holiday break with action across the board! Come down to enjoy the great company of those in the ANCC; play a longer game to settle in for the long break, analyze other games, play shorter games to lighten your mood for a wonderful holiday break, or just visit with the great people of ANCC. Lately, we have had some good games @45, and @60min. I will post some of those soon, as well as some pictures that capture the moments. I would also encourage players to try some timed games using 'stages' as we do in our matches, modifying the lengths of time if desired.
If you have never tried this, it can have an interesting effect on the game where you might struggle to get to a certain part of the middlegame/endgame, but then get that next stage of time to soundly finish out the position you entered into.

So, until tomorrow night, when I will see all of you! :)

Match Play Perseverance!

Our match against the Wombats resulted in another loss, but we are continuing our fight for our first win! The Wombats presented yet another tough challenge, fielding a strong team of players. While we put up a good fight, a victory was not to be. The final score was Wombats: 4.5 MlxACC 1.5, with Kyle getting a win, and Darin a draw.

Our next opportunity for a win will be versus the St. Charles Chess Club, on 30 Nov., next week with the match being held at home at Molex.

Practice and study hard MlxACC players, and we will score a 'W' ! :)

ANCC & Molex battle the Wombats!

Tonight, we, the combined team of ANCC & Molex, are playing the Wombats as a scheduled match with our involvement with the  Chicago Industrial Chess League!  Lets hope we can get a 'W'!

Check out the CICL website at www.chicagochessleague.org for more info, results, etc.

ANCC will be meeting again of course, this upcoming Tuesday night.  We had a good group this past Tuesday night and had some great games.  Come on out next Tuesday to meet some new people, or to see old friends.  Hope to see you here at ANCC!

Open for play!

This past Tuesday night, we had a small but dedicated group of chess players.  Thanks to those that came and enjoyed some quality games of chess, including some longer games.

Unless something out of the blue happens, we will of course meet again next week on Tuesday evening.  Our members competing in the CICL league need to stay tuned to match info for our next upcoming match.  Our next match will be an 'away' match, so ANCC members won't have the opportunity to come and watch at Turners, but the following match versus St. Charles will be a home match, but I am not sure if it will be held at Turners, or our sister organization Molex.

So, come on out on the 1st of November, and celebrate the beginning of the month with some chess play at ANCC!!!

Open During CICL Match!

Reminder:  ANCC will be open during CICL match play versus Downers Grove CC.

Regular ANCC club members (Non-CICL players) are encouraged to attend as normal.  You can watch games in progress for the CICL match, play your own normal club games,
but noise discipline MUST be observed.

Chess On Tuesday

Hello all,
....looking forward to seeing a good crowd tonight for a great night of chess.

Come on out, play a serious game, or a more casual one, its all ok!  The ANCC is open late for a longer serious game with a variety of timing schemes.  If you want to play a 3-5 hour long game, come on down, and ask someone!!!

I have heard some players say they want more serious games, and have not been by due to some players only playing 'casual' games of game @ 30 min. or so.  Please, just ask a player if they want to play a longer game, and someone will say 'sure'!  There is space to move around a bit, and I will have the stage area 'reserved' for serious games, and if you really want to separate yourself, any spot in the whole banquet room is available.

We, the combined team of ANCC and Molex, have a match next week versus the current CICL champions, Downers Grove Chess Club, and I ask all our CICL players to play longer/serious games tonight in prep for that match.

We will be having club this Tuesday!

ANCC will be having club this Tuesday, 27 Sept!!!!

ANCC (& Molex) has started it's CICL play!

We (ANCC, partnered with Molex) played the Lucent Tyros as our first match in the CICL!  Although we lost, we fought well thru the games, but just came up short in the end.  The score of the match was Tryros 4.5, MlxAC 1.5.  It was fun, and we enjoyed meeting other people from the league.

Our next match will be soon, so practice up players, and I will be asking for players available for that match in emails coming out of cyberspace to your inbox in the near future!!

ANCC 20 Sept. cancellation!

ANCC will not meet this Tuesday evening.

As part of ANCC's involvement with the Chicago Industrial Chess League (cicl), we are competing against a team from Lucent.  Originally, I thought ANCC was hosting this match, and ok'd and made notifications for the date of this match.  If we were hosting, we can have our match right alongside a normal club night. When this happens and we host a match, our many other ANCC members can watch the games, and meet players from around the Chicago/suburbs regions.  Remember, anyone in ANCC can join our team.  Please see me, Darin for further information if you are interested in joining our competition team.

However, this match against the Lucent Tyros, will be hosted by Lucent.  Because of this, I must cancel our reg. meeting for this Tuesday, 20 September.  I will schedule any future 'away' cicl matches for wednesday or thursday evenings whenever at all possible.

Wish us luck on our first match within the CICL.  I will post results and perhaps some of the games here on our ANCC website.  You can also check out CICL's website for a ton of info on our matches, and the league in general.

My sincere apologies for this inconvenience.

Another good night of chess!

Thanks to all that came and played some chess, even though the weather outside was a bit wet and windy.  I hope to see you all again next week!!  ... or perhaps at the tourney in DeKalb!

A 'welcome' goes out to Bob, a newcomer to the State of Illinois, and hopefully a regular member here at ANCC!!

Also, a 'welcome' and 'thank you' to Michael; a newcomer last week.  Michael is a gentleman from the old Soviet Union now Russia, and provides a nice addition, and perspective on our games at ANCC.

Welcome both of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you ANCC players...

....for a great night of chess!  I think everyone that attended tonight's (rather, last nights, since it is 1:33 am!) had fun, and enjoyed the evening.  Plus, we saw an additional new player to ANCC.  Again we are continuing to see new faces, and we hope that they continue to visit us at ANCC and make our club strong, vibrant, and a force in the chess board of not only Aurora, but of our greater Chicagoland chess community as well.  In addition, as we grow, our players will branch out and participate in other chess club's tourneys, thus increasing the general visibility of chess.  ANCC thanks every one of our players for their time, talent, and support.

It was nice to see Bill from DeKalb.  His travel time amongst personal and work commitments are much appreciated as his input into ANCC's organizational and tourney foundations.  Great to have Gene and Jeffrey continue to come and play as newer members.  Thank you for your time and skills!  Jake and Kyle, ANCC continues to build on your foundations!  Brad, you have a hectic time of year in your professional job, and I look forward to restarting our board rivalry, but thank you so much for coming in to say "hi"!  Jim, fantastic to meet you.  I hope I get the chance to play you soon as I look forward to seeing you in future ANCC gatherings.  Alex, and Salvador, a big welcome back!! I know it is busy for the both of you with school finishing, and work keeping you either working, sleeping, or eating!  LOL.  Thank you both for coming in and playing as many games as you did!

Our players are continuing their intra-club 'bragging rights' games!  At the end of the month, and at the end of every month, we will tally the wins, and sort a 'hierarchy' accordingly.   I will post this on this site once that is accomplished.  Perhaps we need some sort of prize?  :)

For those ANCC players that were not able to attend, come by next week and get your game on!  Don't forget ANCC is hosting it's first USCF tournament on 5 June!!!  This is a call-out to all those ANCC players that have not been in recently..... don't forget about us!

Anyone... come on in, practice, improve your game, and meet new people before the tourney on 5 June.  Or heck, come in to practice for ANY tourney, such as the Chicago Open at the end of May.  Better yet, come in to ANCC just to socialize and have fun.

Yours truly, and remember to give me Queens odds when you play me ;)

Another Tuesday for Chess!

Hope to see all the familiar faces, and send an open invite for any new faces to come and join us for some fun, comradeship, and games of chess.  Inter-club competition has begun, and the games were well played.  I look forward to seeing everyone again this week!

And darkness befalls the battling forces

Unfortunately, Tuesday's ANCC meeting ( 3 May) was cut short by forces beyond our control. Power went out due to a shortage at a utility location beyond Turners property, yet affecting the Turner's building.  We did give it the 'ol college try and played under emergency lighting from a doorway.  And, Turner's did intend on staying open (thus our time practicing 'night fighting'), but their upstairs emergency lighting faded, and plunged all of upstairs into darkness, resulting in the closing down of Turners.

So, from our unique war games and operational readiness exercise ( the Air Force readers are now sighing) we will be stronger when ANCC meets next week on our regular rotational duties.  Same time, same place!

I encourage any members that have not visited recently to do so!

Chess is great, but hard to compete with Chi Town sports!

We had a small, but dedicated group of chess players this past Tuesday evening.  It is hard to compete when your club is in Chi Town, and the Bulls AND the Blackhawks are both playing in playoff games.  Especially, since the 'Hawks were in game 7 of 7.  However, we did turn on the TV in our playing area so our ANCC club members could watch/keep track of the game.  Needless to say, we didn't have many 'serious' games, but no matter, we had a ton of fun with casual games, playing random openings, and playing some 1 vs 2.  Thanks for the fun times !!!

I hope to see many of you ANCC members, and other chess enthusiasts at tomorrows (Sat) DeKalbs chess clubs last Saturday tourney.  Don't forget, ANCC will be hosting our first tourney on 5 June.  It shall prove interesting, with a scholastic section also playing, and with Turners big once monthly family buffet in the morning.  I hope everyone will be open and patient to our first trying of hosting a tourney.  For whatever happens at that tourney, I will  be glad to take notice of all, and make necessary adjustments for the next one!!

From my Air Force days, people would write/say 'check six!'....  Now in my chess days, does that mean we would say/write check 'check'?  ;)

Till next time in the chess world....

Armies push through weather to win!

While the known saying that an army fights on its stomach is historic in its roots and truth, modern armies must not only be fed, but fight through all types of weather, be it hot, cold, wet or dry.

At ANCC last night (Tuesday, 19 April 2011) we proved just that!  Feeding on Turner food, we generals pushed our forces across the board while storms raged turbulently.   At one point, our forces were pitched into darkness, but alas, quick thinking club members kept the war on across the chess table by playing via cell phone light/flashlight app!!

The power at Turners did come back on after about 15 minutes or so, but the battles did continue, and were not in the least slowed by outside forces.  Identify, adapt, and overcome!  :)

While the weather outside was frightful (I know, its not holiday time, but still) and probably kept a few players from joining us, we still had a good, strong showing.  Thanks to all that came and had fun!  Thanks Brad for the visit, and I hope your 'little brother' saw something of the chess world where he might want to join someday/time.

Till next week, or until some news too juicy to keep until then..
Yours,
 ANCC

Wonderful evening of chess!

A great big thank you to many people!  ANCC had several 'reportable' things to talk about.  One, a group of new players to come by and provide very strong play.  All of you gave a great opportunity to expand the varied styles of  play and ensure a large selection of strength, and styles for our ANCC members to play each week.  If you haven't been to ANCC yet, and are thinking about it, you will definitely now have a wonderful opportunity to play against a diverse group of players.

ANCC thanks you, and hope we see all of you each week!

On a second note of thanks, I wish to thank Mary and Vicki for their enthusiasm for the game and their professional time capturing a snapshot of our ANCC through interviews and photos for the online version of the Chicago Tribune.  You both are welcome anytime to visit on either journalistic terms, or to join us in chess play!  Perhaps we will see you on our Tourney day, 5 June? :)

Chicago Tribune coverage next meeting!

Calling all chess players!  The Chicago Tribune will be visiting us this upcoming Tuesday, 12 April for an upcoming article in their publication!  Come out and let your voice, and game be 'heard'!

As a new club seeking growth, I encourage all those players that have visited ANCC but are not 'regular' attenders, to come on out and be visible on the 12th.  Having a larger presence during their visit will promote a more positive atmosphere of chess brilliance!  ;) for our club to the greater Chicago area.  There will be a photographer present, and while you don't have to get your picture taken, it would be great to have those players that come occasionally to intersect at one time.

Make no mistake, we have had numerous people stop in and play, just not always at the same time.  And I can only imagine that those players wish to play a more diverse group of players, and ANCC has it; you just have to be there yourself to see it!  :)

Thank you!

A warm welcome and thank you to two new faces that came to play at ANCC yesterday (29 March).

Jim and Miguel found ANCC via our ICA (thank you ICA!) presence on their website.  Everyone here at ANCC hopes to see Jim and Miguel frequently, as they are gentlemen and good players!

I devised a ladder for ANCC if any of the regulars are interested in maintaining one.  Currently we are having a great time playing through games (of our own, and others including GM's), analyzing endings, randomly playing various (and I do mean various! :)  ) openings, playing casual and more serious games, playing 1 VS 2 and of course, some bughouse here and there.

Come on out and join us!!  We start at 7pm, and play till Midnight or a little after, so there is plenty of time for whatever ails you chess wise!

PS: check out tourney page as I will be shortly posting official info for the upcoming Tourney on 5 June!!

Growth at ANCC!

This week was another fun night of chess at ANCC.  We are getting a good presence of East Aurora High School with current and past team players along with their Coach Brad.  ANCC certainly appreciates Alex & Salvador taking time to play with us Tuesday nights.

Add them into other consistent players such as Kyle, Jake, Phil, Bill,  and other occasional visitors (James, Gary, and others), the ANCC has great expectations for a high performing membership.  Most of the members above are USCF tourney participants, and we hope to see them, and the rest of our members in ANCC's inaugural Tourney this summer.  Exciting times!

We at ANCC always welcomes new players and visitors.  New to the game players, novice, intermediate, or experienced players are all welcome and encouraged to stop in, and become one of 'us' at ANCC!  We are relaxed, and/or as formal as you wish with PLENTY of room to spread out for a serious game while others may be 'playing thru' (analyzing) a game, playing quick games, playing casual games, playing bughouse (usually later in the evening lol  ) or just socializing.  The Turner's banquet room is large, and accommodating.

You need not bring in a chess set, just bring yourself and a friendly smile!

Sincerely,
Darin Link for ANCC

Bugging at ANCC

Chess at ANCC!

Fun night on 15 Feb club meet time!

Last night, on 15 Feb, we had some new faces as well as some familiar ones playing chess at the ANCC!

There was analyzation going on from the recent DeKalb tourney, short games, medium games, and even some Bug House going on!  Quite a varied, fun and exciting evening of chess.  We played from just in front of 7pm, to midnight!

I look forward to seeing this group again, along with newcomers that I found out from Turners (our gracious host) upstairs when I went to close down for the night should be in attendance next Tuesday.

Of course, I hope to see some of the chess players that have participated, but that I have not seen in a couple weeks.  They (and everyone else!) are always welcome!! We start at 7pm, and the kitchen upstairs in the Turner Club is open until 8pm, so come hungry.  If you don't make it by then, or are still hungry after 8pm, the bar section upstairs always has pizza, several large pretzels, nachos, and I believe now they have hot wings (new).

Come on out; meet the group, socialize, discover new lines of chess, and have fun! Hope to see you soon!

See you Tuesday!

Old man winter has taken a breather, and given a break from the severe weather that sidelined ANCC last Tuesday.  So, we are open for play and hope you will come out and join the fun Tuesday evening at Turners for our next ANCC meeting and enjoy some chess!

As usual, I will be at Turners about 5:30 pm, upstairs, and welcome anyone to come early, socialize, and enjoy some dinner before heading downstairs.  If you do come early, just ask for me -Darin Link- or say you are a ANCC player and they will either buzz you in, or make the announcement for me.  I sit close to the front door and can be there in 10 seconds.

If you arrive at 7, or after, you can come downstairs directly using the 'banquet' door.  There is a yellow banquet sign, and a stairway  at about midway at the front of the building, to the right (south) of the front club door.  It's easy to spot, if you look that way.

I hope to see all you chess players!  We have had a good showing of people, just not all at the same time.  See you Tuesday!

ANCC is under way!

We have had a couple of chess nights now, and are officially under way!  A couple of younger players and a couple of adult players have attended, and have said they will continue to do so.  The younger players are not push overs, and one of the younger players played an experienced adult player to a draw!

Come on out and join us!  All players are welcome to come early for a 'social hour' upstairs in the Turner club area, where the kitchen is open and players can eat and socialize.  Turners is a wonderful venue, and I wish to keep their great generosity of donating the downstairs banquet room for ANCC, and patronizing their establishment will help in doing just that.

ANCC has sets to use, however we do not have clocks yet.  I (Darin Link) can provide a couple, but please bring a clock if you intend to use one.

We play from 7 to whenever.  Lately, I and another player have stayed until 11pm or a little after.  You can play a serious game, or two, or shorter games if you wish!  The kitchen stays open to 8pm upstairs, so you can order up to that time.  The bar upstairs always has pizza, a few kind of pretzels, nachos, and wings so you can always get food even after 8pm.  Naturally, whatever you care to drink from soft beverages up, is available as well.

Looking forward to seeing new players!
